DEFIBRILLATORS

What is a Defibrillator?

Cardiac defibrillation uses a device to give an electric shock to the heart in order to reestablish a normal heartbeat. It’s most commonly used in patients experiencing dangerous arrhythmia or cardiac arrest.

What is the Difference Between a Defibrillator and an ICD?

A defibrillator and an ICD are very similar. One difference, though, is that the ICD is surgically implanted inside the patient's chest so that it can help the patient within seconds of an arrhythmia starting.  Defibrillators are external devices that have to be placed on a patient's chest with pads.  an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is an example of a defibrillator. These devices can be spotted in populated areas like airports or hospitals.
